What is algernon edward sartoris?

Algernon Edward Sartoris was a British politician who lived from 1828 to 1895. He was the son of Edward Sartoris, a wealthy merchant and landowner, and Lady Elizabeth Bertie, daughter of the Earl of Lindsey.

Sartoris was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge before entering the diplomatic service. He served as a Vice-Consul in Greece and then as a Consul in Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey) before resigning in 1864 to focus on politics.

Sartoris was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Andover constituency in 1865 and held the seat for 11 years. He was a Liberal politician and his political views were generally progressive, including support for women's suffrage and Irish Home Rule.

Sartoris was also a philanthropist and donated generously to various charities and causes. He was a founder and supporter of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and his financial contributions helped to establish the Great Northern Hospital in London.

Sartoris was married twice and had eight children. He died in 1895 at the age of 66.
